Physical Appearance: Nate was his rugby coach's dream player. Extremely
tall and heavily muscled, he tends to look a bit ridiculous behind a desk or
fiddling with astrometric sensors. He moves surprisingly quick for his size,
a left-over of his athletic and military past. He tends to walk in an imposing
manner, but he's quick to flash a cheerful smile whenever he sees someone.
Personal History: Nate's father was a shipping manager for a large trading
company, and his mother was a grade-school teacher. Nate inherited the large
physical size of his father's side of the family, but his mother's scientific
curiosity. As he grew, his father pushed him to excel at sports, signing him
up for everything available. Nate did ferociously well, due to his inherent
size and strength. But, while he enjoyed the games, they never really satisfied
him.
Whenever his father wasn't around, Nate's mother encouraged him to explore his
mind. She introduced him to science and the arts, giving him relief from the
unrelenting pressure his father put on him to succeed.
Nate wanted to become a scientist, but his father laughed and mocked him every
time the subject was broached, telling him to quit fooling himself. Almost to
spite his father Nate started learning on his own, spending endless hours in
the library or in his room in the dark with a flashlight, pouring over mathematical
texts and literature. Years of abuse from his father nearly convinced him of
his stupidity, however, and Nate enlisted in the Marines as soon as he turned
eighteen.
It took his drill sergeant to wake Nate's mind again. The sergeant came to realize
Nate's true dreams and capabilities, and virtually forced the young man into
Starfleet Academy. Suddenly, Nate found himself in an environment that encouraged
him to stretch all of his capacities and began to come out of his shell.
Nate became almost a mascot to his class, and they all pitched in to help him
pursue his dream. At the end of his Academy training, Nate had doggedly completed
his Doctorate in Astrophysics, and graduated near the middle of his class. His
mother cried at his graduation -- his father never came.
Immediately after graduation, he was posted to Science Station 32 for a few
months, but was transferred to the USS Darwin when the position of Astrophysics
officer opened.
Personality: Despite his achievements and physical prowess, Nate suffers
from a delusion that his mind is inferior to the rest of the ship. He compensates
for this by a voracious reading habit and a tireless work ethic. He always finds
time to keep up his athletic prowess, as he found that sheer physical effort
clears his mind, allowing him to solve problems faster. In interpersonal relationships,
although he looks imposing, he is a very affable fellow, friendly and open to
everyone.
